BALA : Puranapanda Srinivas ; Gnana Maha yagna Kendram, Rajahmundry - 533104- . Rs. 34/-
A COLLECTION of hymns on Goddess Durga, this book is in two languages. The text of each hymn is given first in Sanskrit, and then follow the transliterated versions in Telugu . The translations of the verses are also provided. The hymns include: Durga Saptasati (from Devi Mahatmyam), Durga Pancharatna (of the Paramacharya), Durga Suktam (of Yudhistira) and Rana Durga Sthusthi,Saptha Sloki Durga , Argalaa Mahaa mantram, Aparaajithaa stotram, Sri lalitha sahasra nama stotam, Sri Devi Khadgamaala Nama stotram, Sri lalitha Trisathi Nama Stotram, Durga Chandrakala Stuti (of Appayya Dikshita).
It is universally acknowledged that Durga Saptasati and brahmanda puranana which gets the pride of place in this publication, is a mantra sastra, and the text itself indicates this in the part where Goddess is invoked. Towards the end, the hymn records the Divine Mother giving the assurance that wherever the text is recited she would make it her permanent abode and that intense meditation on the verses would fetch liberation.
This is reminiscent of the Gopika Gita where the gopis say Goddess Lakshmi has made Vrajabhoomi her permanent abode because of the presence of Lord Krishna.
The author Puranapanda srinivas deserves to be complimented for making available these highly powerful pieces of hymnal literature to a wider audience.
For an ordinary devotee keen on recitation and meditation, it would suffice to get an idea of the meaning of the verses. For those interested in getting deep into the esoteric import of the verses, however, cross-references to the various commentaries available would have enhanced the value of the book.
